By now, we all know that if we eliminate bad foods and eat nourishing and healthy foods, our bodies will heal, thrive, grow stronger and will glow with radiance. So why don’t we take the same approach with our hair? The same way that raw foods supply nourishment to your body, raw hair care provides nourishment to your hair.
Think of your scalp as the soil to the garden that is your hair. If that “soil” is continually being subjected to unnatural toxins and harsh conditions, the garden will suffer the consequences. Our scalp and hair really do consume and ingest the chemicals (or the nutrients) that you put on them. So in order to have a healthy “garden”, you must start by removing these toxins from your hair routine and replace them with nourishing products. This will allow your scalp and hair to detox, heal, grow stronger and fuller and project radiance.
5 Hair Care Toxins That You Need To Eliminate
Parabens are used to prolong the shelf life of a product. When they enter the body of a man or woman through the skin, they resemble estrogen which can lead to issues ranging from low testosterone to breast cancer.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
SLS is what makes a shampoo or soap lather. SLS was originally created to degrease factories, plants and engines during a time of war. It did the job then and since has been put in our shampoos, toothpaste and other beauty products to degrease us! Kinda scary, huh?
Polymers are liquid plastics or petroleum. If you think about it, would you touch liquid plastics or knowingly put them on your body? Polymers in your hair care products cover or mask the hair follicle so that the scalp or “soil” cannot breathe.
These artificial colors which are thought to be carcinogenic are sometimes hidden in your labels using descriptions like: PEG followed by a number or D&C followed by a color. These colors are actually the same compounds that can be found in a can of paint and again, are usually derived from petroleum.
Added Fragrances may smell pretty but they are typically made from toxic chemicals. Since there are no regulations on cosmetic labeling in this area, manufacturers can hide thousands of hazardous compounds behind this innocent sounding word. But, don’t be fooled. If they don’t disclose what is in the bottle, there’s a reason they don’t want you to know their secret concoction.
Read the labels on your shampoos, conditioners and hair care products. If you can’t pronounce or understand the words, get rid of it! If it’s a bright, beautiful (unnatural) color or smells like candy, ditch that bottle now!

How To Use The Zen Detox
First, take the powder and mix it in a wooden or glass bowl with natural or distilled water and let it sit for at least 24 hours. The mixture should be the consistency of cream or yogurt. Next, apply it to your scalp and hair. You can also apply it to your face, neck and shoulders. Then, sit outside in the sun so it will start pulling out the impurities. If sitting outside is not an option, cover your hair in saran wrap so your body heat keeps it warm. After 15 minutes, you may start to feel uncomfortable so you can rinse it out or leave it on for up to an hour, maximum. Do not leave it on longer than that! Lastly, as you rinse off the treatment, it will pull the toxins out of your scalp and body. Do not shampoo and let air dry. Repeat again once a week for 2 more weeks and then once per season thereafter to maintain.

How Often Should You Detox Your Hair?
For best results, you may need to use this hair therapy once a week for three weeks and then once every three months thereafter to remove buildup from daily life. Each container should provide enough for three uses.
During the three week transition period, you may experience changes in your hair that could lead to dryness, matting, dulling or excess oil. Just remember that this means that its working, so hang in there! The final result will be well worth any temporary problems. So in other words, don’t do this right before a big event. Depending on how bad you’ve treated your hair, it could take 3-30 days to completely finish your hair detox. For most people though, their hair will look great after just a few days.
Once your three week treatment is over (and even before that), your hair will be healthier than it has ever been! It will be manageable, shiny and luxurious!
What About Shampoo & Conditioner?
Many have had good results with their own DIY shampoos and conditioners or with the no-poo method. I have never been one of those people. As far as DIY goes, I do make my own soap, deodorant and cleaning products but I have never ventured into the do-it-yourself hair care or makeup. If you ask anyone that knows me, you do not want to mess with my hair! I am the girl that will cry over a bad haircut so I prefer to leave my hair care up to the professionals.
As I mentioned above, the only hair products that I use now are the Morrocco Method by Anthony Morrocco. He has been in the hair care industry for over 50 years and has worked with many celebrities. His approach is different than any others that I’ve seen. All of his products are free of chemicals, toxins, parabens, gluten and all the other bad stuff listed above. They are color-safe, hypoallergenic, non-toxic and gluten free. The ingredients in each product are carefully selected, wild-crafted botanicals, marine proteins, herbs and minerals. Very minimal heat is used when creating the products and there are absolutely no chemical additives.
The Morrocco Method shampoos are great for your if you have:
- Dry hair
- Split ends
- Grey hair
- Thinning hair
- Gluten issues or Celiac Disease
- Autoimmune conditions
- Heavy metal toxicity
- Chemical sensitivities
- Hair loss from chemotherapy

One last thing.. ounce for ounce, these products are more expensive than your typical supermarket hair care products. But keep in mind, these shampoos are very concentrated so you use just a small amount mixed with water each time you wash. Many times, people can go several days (3-5) between washes without issue so they last a long time. Also, after you get past the transition phase, you will likely not even need a conditioner. I know it sounds crazy, but it’s true! Click here or the logo above to learn more from their official website!
