From the mouth to the colon, our digestive systems need to maintain a very delicate balance. Within this tract, there are trillions of living microorganisms that we need to survive. We cannot exist without them since they support many of our bodies processes like digestion and hormones.
To maintain balance, 85% of our gut flora should be friendly bacteria and 15% should be the unfriendly bacteria including Candida. When our bodies become unbalanced because of stress, poor diet including refined grains and sugars, the unfriendly bacteria begin to feast and multiply and become what is known as Candida Overgrowth.
Unfortunately, many that have this issue do not even realize that they have this problem in their systems. Often times, Candida overgrowth will then trigger infections throughout the body and cause issues like yeast infections, oral thrush, digestive issues and skin issues like eczema or psoriasis.
Symptoms of Candida Overgrowth include:
- Recurring yeast infections
- Acne or skin problems, eczema, psoriasis or fungal infections
- Low immune system, get sick more than you should
- Chronic digestive issues
- Brain fog
- Mood issues and depression
- Mouth issues like thrush (white coating on tongue), bad breath, canker sores
- Extremely low energy levels
- Asthma or sinus issues
What caused my Candida problem?
As with Leaky Gut Syndrome, various factors can contribute to Candida overgrowth including:
- Overuse of Antibiotics. Antibiotics kill the bad bacteria along with the good.
- Birth Control Pills
- Stress or stressful lifestyle
- Dehydration from overuse of alcohol
- Poor Diet consisting of sugary and processed foods
- Acidic body that causes yeast to grow rapidly
Which foods should I avoid on a Candida diet?
It is commonly known that Candida and yeast feed off of sugar. Therefore, whichever Candida diet that you decide to follow should remove sugar and foods that turn into sugar in your system. This would include white bread, white pasta, grains, white rice, oatmeal, other processed carbs.
Even natural sugars found in fruit juices and some fruits that have a high concentration of sugar can cause Candida to get worse. Avoid fruits with stems like cherries and grapes which tend mold quickly and are easy to overeat.
Most alcohol products and beer contain a high amount of sugar and yeast and should be avoided at all costs.
All Vinegars except raw, unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar.
Foods that mold easily like nuts, cheeses, mushrooms.
Which foods should I eat on a Candida diet?
- Grass-fed, pastured (not pasteurized) or organic meats
- High fiber foods
- Healthy fats and antioxidants
- During the first few weeks of your diet, limit fruit to green apples, lemons, limes, grapefruits and berries that are very fresh and rinsed well.
- Nuts & seeds
- Beans or legumes
- Coconut Oil is a great anti fungal superfood
- Balance your PH with alkaline foods like spinach and kale
- Fermented and cultured foods are acceptable in small amounts
Note: If you are going to have a small amount of starch like sweet potato or quinoa, be sure to include alkalizing foods that will balance out the unrefined grains.

Supplements that Kill and Heal Candida
As with any supplement, you want high quality products that are based on real or whole foods, not synthetics. Always be sure that the vitamins or supplements that you take are from natural sources and whole foods.
Probiotics – Since good bacteria do not grow as easily, you need to replenish and rebalance your gut with a good quality probiotic. At least 50 billion units to kill off bad and build up good. Garden of Life has several great probiotic products that are 50 billion or more and made from real raw foods with no fillers or synthetic ingredients. I personally use the Ultimate Care 100 billion but they also have a Women’s specific product with 85 billion units and a Men’s specific product with 85 billion units as well.
Candida Cleanse – Candida which is mostly made up of fiber, can be broken down by fiber-digesting enzymes and probiotics. Garden of Life’s RAW Candida Cleanse are amazing plant-based capsules that work to break down the cell walls of the yeast. It also includes RAW Vitamin C and Biotin which are great antioxidant support your immune system.
Oil of Oregano – This is not like the dry oregano that you use in your recipes! This is a very potent and concentrated anti fungal that has a lot of power over Candida! You will want to take about 100mg, 3-4 times a day for up to a month. Do not take this longer than a month or it will kill off good bacteria. I personally find it hard to use the liquid so I prefer the oil of oregano capsules. New Chapter’s Oregano Force is very concentrated with 250mg per capsule so shouldn’t take more than 2 per day for up to a month.
Liquid Silver – Build up your immune system by using this healthy liquid antibacterial. The American Biotech Labs’ Silver Biotics is designed to boost your body’s natural defenses against Candida. Take 1tsp, 3 times a day. Regardless of what you may have heard, you will NOT turn blue by taking this liquid silver. This product is safe for your entire family’s daily use.
Vitamin D3 – This is very important supplement because it produces antimicrobials that help fight Candida. You can get Vitamin D3 from being in the sun for at least 20 minutes per day but you may need more when fighting or healing a disease. It is easy to get your levels checked by your doctor or by a quick lab test. Again, find a D3 that comes from a natural or raw foods source. Most Vitamin D3 supplements are sourced from the lining of sheep skin so I recommend using a Vegan formula like Garden of Life’s Raw Vitamin Code D3, 5,000 IU.
Psyllium Seed & Blend – Not all Psyllium products work the same to help Candida. Many of the products on the market are made up of psyllium husk powders only which do provide a laxative effect but do only minimal intestinal cleaning. Candida can quickly breed on any build-up or fecal matter that is left inside the intestinal walls. That is why crushed psyllium seed powder is also needed to gently scrape away this toxic waste from your intestinal walls. There are only a few products that blend the husk and seed powders together. This Psyllium Powder Blend is recommended by one of the leading Candida organizations.
As with any dietary or natural supplements, please consult your doctor before making any changes.
How can I test for Candida?
An inexpensive way to measure the acidity in your body are through the use of PH test strips. The best way to use these is by putting the strip into your first urination of the day. This will give you the most accurate reading. You can also put these in your mouth to test your saliva but it will not be as accurate of a reading.
Stool tests are another way to test for Candida. It’s definitely not a glamorous process but if will give you the information that you need to start treating you gut issues. You can check with your medical doctor or like me, order your own lab test online! Be sure to get a printout to see what strain of your bacteria is off so you know how to treat it.
