When most people think of a detox program, they either think of going into a rehabilitation center or starting one of those crazy celebrity juice fasts that leave you starving for days. That’s what I always thought! But Dictionary.com defines the word detoxify as: “to rid of poison or the effect of poison”. So what poisons are we talking about here?
Day to day, each of us are faced with a large number of harsh chemicals that can be found almost everywhere we turn. Without realizing it, these toxins can be found in our food, water, air, home and in almost every environment that we find ourselves in. Even though the human body can handle some of this abuse; poor food choices, busy lifestyles and the mounting stress that come with it can overwhelm our natural cleansing functions. This can ultimately contribute to various and even serious health issues, just like I have experienced myself.
Signs that you may need to Detox
- Constant fatigue
- Stress and anxiety
- Unable to fall or stay sleep
- Skin rashes or breakouts
- Seasonal allergies
- Constantly getting sick
- Puffy eyes, dark circles
- Digestive issues like constipation, gas, bloating
- Sugar and carb cravings
- Menstrual problems
- Foggy thinking
- Mood swings
- Inability to lose weight
- Leaky Gut Syndrome
- Autoimmune Disease
If you experience a number of the issues mentioned above, you should begin a cleanse diet immediately!
What can you do right away?
First, your detox should start by eliminating any obvious toxins in your diet. This would include refined sugars, artificial sweeteners, processed grains, saturated fats, alcohol and cigarettes.
More specifically, this includes foods such as:
- Fast food
- Soda and diet soda
- Packaged cereals
- Breads and pastas
- Low fat dairy
- Packaged cookies
- Chips and other pre-packaged snack foods
I know, I know! These are the foods that most of our families have grown to love! However, even if there is some resistance at first, removing these refined food items from your home will really benefit your entire family. So since you will be eliminating these “foods”, you will need to replace them with healthier alternatives in order to get your family on board with the idea.
By this point, you have probably read a lot of conflicting information on what actually is “healthy”. So, how do you know which diet plan is best for you and your family?
What detox methods are safe and effective?
You will find many detox programs that promise an instant cure to all of your problems with a simple pill or shake. This will NOT get to the root of your health issues. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! The best detox diets would always be based around eating nutritious whole foods. This would include purchasing the best quality whole foods that your family can afford. The best options would include grass-fed or pastured (not pasteurized) animal products and organic fruits and vegetables. The end goal should be to eliminate processed and Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) or GM foods from your diet and focus on eating for REAL!
A whole foods diet can be easily visualized by thinking about your local grocery store. Instead of shopping up and down every isle for the ingredients to your family’s meals, you shop around the perimeter of the store. The bulk of your food shopping should not be made up of boxed and prepackaged foods. You should choose real, whole (preferably organic) foods. You may also learn to buy healthier foods by trying to shop at a local Farmer’s Market. This is a great place to start to get the nutritious foods that your family needs, while avoiding all the “junk”!
So what is the best detox diet plan?
Starting any new diet plan can be an overwhelming process if you try to tackle it on your own. Been there, done that? Just determining what foods to buy, what foods to avoid and what meals to make, requires an enormous amount of time and energy. I’ve researched and tried many detox programs. I’ve had a few successes and many failures along the way but I finally found something that provided the most support for a picky eater like me.
The 21 Day Sugar Detox by Diane Sanfillippo does so much of the work for you. Whether you are just beginning a diet based on whole foods, or you have been doing it for years, it really is a perfect fit for anyone. It has three different program entry levels to choose from. Not only will Diane teach you to eliminate sugar but you will also learn what foods are inflammatory and why they make you feel sluggish. She will then teach you to introduce healing foods into your diet that will give you energy and clear thinking! This plan is also great for families (yes, including the kids) that want to get healthy together.
This cookbook and meal plan provides so many delicious and nutritious recipes that will surely please everyone. Even if someone in the family is dealing with a food allergy, intolerance or specific dietary restrictions, it’s all covered in the book. All of the recipes are marked accordingly to make meal selection and preparation easy for the cook! This was the best part for me since I have issues with nightshades and FODMAPS and it can be majorly challenging to find recipes that fit all of my food sensitives.
In addition to the 21 Day Sugar Detox book, you will also gain access to the exclusive members area. Here you can be a part of an online community that will support you during your journey which like me, you may need. You will also receive additional e-cookbooks, guides and audio support from Diane. I would recommend upgrading your package to include the additional cookbook that includes over 100 extra recipes for use during your 21 day cleanse, and beyond. That extra cookbook was such a huge help to me because it gave me more of variety to choose from since I have my food issues and a picky palate!
This program will give you everything that you need to start detoxing your diet and your body today!
